Overview & History
Saint Edward-Epiphany School (SEES) is a regional Catholic co-ed day school for grades pre-K through eighth. SEES draws from the resources of Saint Edward Catholic Church and the Church of the Epiphany in Chesterfield County. Pastors of these parishes participate in the formal liturgical education of our students, which includes Eucharistic liturgies, celebration of Holy Days of Obligation and special prayer services.
Founded in September of 1961, as “Saint Edward School,” classes were initially offered for first and second grade only. After the dedication of Saint Edward the Confessor Church, additional grades were added each year, from 1962 until 1965. Although the first eighth grade graduation was held in June of 1966, it was not until June of 1969 that the school graduated students who had attended classes since the first grade.
In September of 1979, the school transcended regionally to service both Saint Edward and a newly created Church of the Epiphany. It was at this time, that the school changed its name to Saint Edward-Epiphany School. The school’s academic program also expanded in subsequent years, to include a pre-school program for four year-olds, full-day kindergarten classes, a one of its kind, “transitional first grade” (T-1) program, an in-house LD resource program, and advance study opportunities in mathematics and Spanish. A variety of extra-curricular programs and after-school enrichment sessions, as well as two daycare programs were also implemented. The school now serves the parishes of Saint Edward, Epiphany, Saint John Neumann, Sacred Heart, Saint. Augustine and Saint Gabriel—all which are part of the regional school.
In the fall of 2000, the generosity and creativity of school families and supporters led to the realization of a long-held dream! After many years of fund-raising and planning, the doors of the new Activity Center opened wide, to provide SEES students with a much needed space to accommodate indoor athletics, art, music and drama. The Activity Center has further developed into a favorite gathering place for student, church and community functions.
Today, Saint Edward-Epiphany School continues in its mission to provide quality education and Christian ministry. This mission is supported through program review, reevaluation and planning under the guidance of the Diocese of Richmond.
